We all know and love Louis Vuitton‘s iconic Monogram coated canvas, but another loved type of material from LV is Epi Leather. The collection was launched on 1985 and has since been used in many styles, from the classic Speedy  and Keepall, to newer models like the Twist and the Petit Malle.

The Louis Vuitton Epi Leather collection was introduced in 1985, and it was the first permanent leather collection of the French house. It was inspired by a leather used by Louis Vuitton during the 1920s. This textured leather was sturdier and more durable than its canvas counterparts, and better equipped for modern travel. Here are some other facts you need to know about Louis Vuitton Epi Leather:

  • The leather is tanned with plant extracts to give it its iconic two-tone quality
  • The embossed Epi Leather makes it durable and waterproof
  • Some of our customers who have never touched an Epi Leather bag before mention that it feels a bit like plastic, but this is because the leather is heavily embossed and rigid. Some people love Epi, some people don’t
  • The Louis Vuitton Epi Leather lining is most commonly Alcantara lining, matching the outside of the bag
  • The Electric Epi collection was introduced in 2010, in three glossy colors: Black, Amande and Plum
